presentation at aviation museum of nh

Join us March 26 at 7:00 PM at the Aviation Museum of NH in Londonderry.

In 253 AD, becoming Roman Emperor was less a promotion and more a death sentence.

Fourteen emperors in forty-two years—almost all murdered.

And into that chaos stepped a 35-year-old philosopher with a sardonic wit and a collapsing empire on his hands.

On March 26, Skip brings Gallienus vividly to life in an engaging, presentation that blends history, storytelling, archaeology, coin evidence, and sharp insight into leadership under pressure.

This isn’t a history lecture. It’s a deep dive into resilience, power, crisis, and the man who somehow survived fifteen years when survival alone was a triumph.

What to Expect:

  • A multimedia presentation
  • Behind-the-scenes stories from Skip’s research journey
  • A fresh perspective on one of Rome’s most misunderstood emperors
  • Q&A with the author
  • Book signing and opportunity to meet Skip before and after the program

If you love Roman history, leadership stories, or simply great storytelling—this is your night.

Seats are limited. Come early, bring a friend, and stay after to meet the author and have your book signed.

interview with skip carter for the nh writers' project 2025 holiday showcase

December 2025

In this Holiday Showcase interview with the NH Writers’ Project, historical novelist Skip Carter shares his remarkable journey from Navy fighter pilot and international cargo aviator to author of sweeping novels set during Rome’s Crisis of the Third Century. Drawing on decades of travel, firsthand encounters with ancient ruins, and deep historical research, Skip discusses how he discovered the overlooked emperor Gallienus and why this turbulent era became the foundation of his fiction.

The conversation explores Skip’s research process, the evolution of his story into a two-book series, his use of genealogy to track complex characters, and his approach to blending historical evidence with imagination. Skip also reflects on the vital role the NH Writers’ Project has played in his growth as a writer, from editing and design to marketing support, and shares why he chose to give back to the organization that helped shape his writing journey.

This is a portrait of persistence.

When I first moved to New Hampshire in 2006, I was casting about for work. Someone suggested I offer a writing course for seniors, and connected me with the Bedford Adult/Senior Committee. I pitched them on a Senior Writing Workshop.

They said yes (though we refashioned it as an “Adult Writing Class,” to expand our potential audience, I suppose), we picked a date for an open house to promote the class, and I made flyers, prepared a survey, and nervously looked forward to the event.

One person showed up.

But that one person, Skip Carter, had an idea for a historical novel about a lesser-known Roman Emperor. He wondered if I could help him bring it to life.

Great Read!

There’s a new book out that may be of interest…

Perilous Privilege,” by Skip Carter, contains all the elements of an exciting, enticing novel intertwined with accurate historical accounts of third century Rome. One could not find a more engaging book about this dangerous era of the Roman Empire when political assassination and intrigue abounded, amidst ongoing military campaigns, triangular love affairs, great rivalries, and the ever present victories and violence of warfare.

November 6, 2024: Congratulations to Skip Carter on the release of Perilous Privilege!

In the autumn of 253, Gallienus, a thirty-five-year-old Patrician is unexpectedly appointed co-emperor by the Senate, with his father, Valerian. He is an unlikely choice with his Greek education, sardonic personality and his reputation for frequenting brothels and taverns, behavior considered scandalous by his contemporaries.
